“Each child is walking around the school that little bit taller” – SENCO, Primary School

Children aged 5-11 years can be referred for Creative Mentoring through their school or children’s social care.

Our Creative Mentoring Team will match the child with a Creative Mentor, based on their likes, interests and location. Creative Mentors work to refocus efforts to identify what it is the child needs to help them become ‘unstuck’, and to build their skills, confidence and competencies to support reengagement.

The Creative Mentor will use sessions to get to know the child and where to initiate one-to-one creative activity. Working with the child is always practical, using a range of different art forms (for example film, drama, music, poetry, photography and stories) to help children people safely explore the world around them, learn new skills, communicate with others and address personal and emotional issues from a ‘creative distance’.

For Primary aged children, Creative Mentoring usually happens in a school setting, although it can also take place elsewhere and meet the child where they feel most comfortable. This might be in an arts venue, their residential home or alternative provision setting.

With sessions taking place in school, children can be helped to build positive associations and experiences within the school setting, to make them feel confident and comfortable to successfully re-engage. We have seen fantastic results of children reengaging with their class full time, building stable peer relationships and developing their learning.

The Mighty Creatives offer Creative Mentoring as a commissioned service on a case-by-case basis using Pupil Premium Plus or wider social care support funding. We also provide fully and part-funded opportunities for those children who do not have access to additional funding.
